PlanningRough-Cut Capacity Plan Excel Template
Use this Excel workbook to compare required and available critical-resource hours by period and flag early overload gaps before production release.
This Excel workbook helps plan critical resources before production release. Enter family-level demand, critical-resource rates, and available hours by period. The workbook calculates a family-level feasibility view and critical-resource gaps.
The primary planning unit is a critical resource for a period. This is a bounded rough-cut planning aid, not a detailed production-capacity plan. The workbook is available as an Excel file for offline planning.

What this workbook helps you do
- Compare entered available hours with calculated critical-resource hours required by period.
- Identify period-resource combinations where calculated required hours exceed available hours.
- Find demand, rate, calendar, and matching entries that need review before using the screen result.
- See each family row alongside the total load for its related critical resource and period.
Included sheets and controls
- Dashboard shows calculated summary counts, a family-level feasibility preview, and a critical-resource capacity preview.
- Demand & Rates includes entered period, family, critical resource, demand, and rate fields plus calculated critical-hour and status fields.
- Calendar & Resource Gaps includes entered available critical hours and calculated required hours, positive gap hours, and resource-gap status fields.
- Instructions explains the entry sequence, unit convention, sample rows, prepared rows, and rough-cut planning boundary.

How to use the workbook
1. Enter available critical hours
On Calendar & Resource Gaps, enter one row for each planning period and critical resource. Enter available critical hours in hours. Use the same period date and critical-resource description on matching demand rows.
2. Enter family demand and rates
On Demand & Rates, enter the period, product family, critical resource, family-level demand in units, and critical-resource rate in hours per unit.
3. Replace examples and review statuses
Rows 5 through 12 on the input sheets contain illustrative sample values. Replace or clear those examples. Review calculated input and match statuses, including incomplete inputs, numeric issues, missing calendars, and duplicate calendar rows.
4. Read the calculated screens
Use Dashboard for calculated counts and previews. Use Calendar & Resource Gaps for the prepared resource-level gap list. Feasible, Gap, and Check Inputs are calculated results based on the values entered in the workbook.
Family demand converted to critical hours
On Demand & Rates, each row pairs a product family with a period and critical resource. The calculated family demand converted to critical hours uses family-level demand × critical-resource rate.
Demand is labeled in units. The rate is labeled in hours per unit. Calculated load is shown in hours. The workbook does not convert unit bases.
Required hours compared with available hours
For each matching period and critical resource, the workbook sums calculated critical hours from ready family rows. It compares that total with the available critical hours entered on Calendar & Resource Gaps.
A critical-resource gap is calculated as required hours minus available hours only when required hours are greater. The gap field displays positive gap hours, not a negative remaining-hours value.
Input and calendar review points
Calculated status fields identify incomplete demand or rate entries, numeric input issues, missing period calendars, and duplicate calendar records. A demand row also checks whether its period and critical resource have a calendar match.
Only one calendar row should be entered for each period-resource combination. A duplicate period-resource calendar record is shown for input review rather than used as a valid capacity record.
Rough-cut planning before production release
This workbook is limited to critical-resource planning before production release. It gives a family-level feasibility view and a prepared list of critical-resource gaps.
It does not create a detailed production-capacity load or schedule. It is an operational aid based on user-entered planning values and calculated workbook results.

Questions about this workbook
Enter period, product family, critical resource, family-level demand in units, and critical-resource rate in hours per unit on Demand & Rates. Enter period, critical resource, and available critical hours on Calendar & Resource Gaps.
For a complete demand row, the formula multiplies family-level demand by the critical-resource rate. The result is shown as family demand converted to critical hours.
The screen shows Feasible when calculated total required critical hours are less than or equal to entered available critical hours for the related period and critical resource. It shows Gap when calculated required hours exceed entered available hours. It shows Check Inputs when needed entries or matches are not ready.
The field shows only a calculated positive gap. A blank field can mean calculated required hours do not exceed available hours, or that related values are not ready for calculation. Review the related status fields.
No. Rows 5 through 12 on both input sheets contain illustrative sample values. Replace or clear all example values before entering planning data.
